Fitzwilliam Wine Club
We have been meeting every other month in the Parish Hall for over twenty years. Our current Chairman is from Whiston.
Members of the club are from all over Rotherham with some from Barnsley and Sheffield. The club was an amalgamation of two clubs which met in Rotherham and Wath so on the third Thursday of February, April, June, August, October and December we meet in Whiston. The meetings in Wath are on the third Monday of January, March, May, July, September and November. Members are free to attend both venues.
We usually hold a Summer Garden Party at the beginning of August in a members garden.
We sample 8 wines, usually 4 whites and 4 reds, at our meetings with presentations being made by ourselves or by visiting experts and suppliers. Cheese, Pate and crusty bread is provided as accompaniments to the wines. At our last meeting, in Wath, two of our members presented and eclectic selection of excellent wines from the Wickersley branch of Threshers with prices ranging from just over £5 to £24. The October meeting, in Whiston, was presented by Oddbins of Sheffield, and included some excellent examples from the New World.
It is a sociable club which helps and encourages people to experience and explore the vast range of wines available to us in this country.
We have, until the recent past, also organised wine related tours and holidays in France, Germany and here in England.
With a membership of 85 or so our ages range from mid thirties to high eighties.
