Whiston Brass Band
Whiston Brass Band was formed in 1985 and commenced rehearsals in the Village Hall, later moving to the Lonsdale Club. The Band organised a Contest which was held at the Club and for several years this was a very successful event.
We were and still are very much involved in the Village happenings, playing at the Whiston Gala, Remembrance Day marches and the Barn. We are now in the very fortunate position of being able to hold rehearsals in Whiston Barn and thanks to the support of the Parish Council and Barn Committee hold Community Concerts there.
Whilst we originally entered Area and Entertainment Contests we now concentrate more on concert playing although we do enter the local Entertainment Contest in Rotherham, which this year will be held at Magna. We also help charities and do a minimum of 4 charity concerts every year.
The Band has a very busy schedule throughout the summer playing at summer fetes, garden parties, scout parades and Clifton Park bandstand. In winter time we have an almost busier time carolling at Christmas and of course our ' formal' concerts at the Barn which are always very well supported in the village.
We have an enthusiastic talented Musical Director, Mr Joe Johnson, who was a member of the Band prior to University. He has been with us for several years now and from time to time composes music for the Band - one piece of which was 'Millennium' which was included in our concert at the Millennium Dome in London.
Whiston Band also has a 'junior' section which is open to anyone who has an interest in wanting to learn and play music. As with the 'senior' section of the Band, age has no relevance and both sections have older as well as younger players involved.
Rehearsals are held every Wednesday and Sunday evenings in the Whiston Manorial Barn. Anyone interested in joining the Band should contact us then - no age limit and we will assist if you cannot play but would be willing to learn.
