Your experiences of June, 2007

'...It was a bit scary being knocked up by the police at 3 a.m. (Police were panicking) telling us Ulley Resevoir was about to burst. We were at top of Pleasley Road in no time ...'

Brinsworth Switching Station

'...The thing I found most scary was the pylons and the fact that the police said that if it did burst and the water came down from Ulley that it would wash them down and the substation ... '

'... We are at Lower Whiston on West Bawtry Road, and got half evacuated tuesday morning, police man knocked on door at 6.00am said we needed to evacate to Herringthorpe as Ulley dam about to burst its banks and we were in flood path! We didnt know anything about it as electric had been off since 9.30 Monday night. We took the computer upstairs and got into the car to go. Could not go Whiston - way blocked off - could not go to Brinsworth as river rageing over bridge. Roundabout was gridlocked water up to roundabout! so the police sent us back home ! Two double decker buses waited all day ready to evacuate us. Eventually we found a radio with batteries (lucky it worked not used for three years)and we found out about Catcliffe, Sheffield etc mobile had run out of charge (of all the days to run out) It was very eerie no traffic on our road(only happens Christmas morning)helicopters boats and rescue gear then coming through. Neighbours sharing radios bread and milk, it felt like world war III had been declared.Gratefully nothing happened to us but all the poor people that have been flooded out all over the county I really feel for them. Hope this finds you ok could mail till today broadband only just come back on for us, ...'

'...Heard on Radio Sheffeld about the lady who returned to her home at Turner Lane on Thursday to find a Peacock in her garden...'

'... there was a National grid man stationed at the Hotel facing the sub-station ready to turn it off remotely should he get message from police - he was there for two days. What would have happened if he had fallen asleep cos he was tired - we asked him if he was hungery or thirsty and he said he had been well 'packed up' ! ...'

'What a sight!!!!! Glad you are all ok. I phoned my brother in Rawmarsh, he & his wife were okay. My niece, who works for the Corporation is very busy, but she and her Mum are high and dry in Kimberworth Park. My youngest sister lives near Stroud in Gloucestershire and had a shallow river running down the road in front of her house. But she & her husband are safe. It certainly caused a sensation on the news over here in Canada & in the States for awhile until some other news came along.
Stay safe!

'...Just looking at your pictures of Whiston Brook on Whiston web Shocking!. Went to work yesterday at Meadowhall. At Starbucks,a generator blew up. As a result although Marks & Spencers was not affected by water damage, the freezes and fridges defrosted and food had to be disposed of. Some shops beyond repair need a complete refit and may never recover. The smell was not as bad as I had imagined, a bit like Bridlington Harbour!'

'...These accounts are fascinating. It really brings home a few facts which you normally wouldn't think about - how can evacuations succeed if you're cut off from the exits, how do you get news to someone who doesn't have electricity, what about food and water... '
