Whiston Long Barn and Whiston Hall
August, 2008The earliest surviving timber-framed building in Yorkshire is probably the long barn that the lords of Hallamshire built here at Whiston
An Aisled barn it dates from c. 1225. The aisled structure provided a large floor area which could serve a multi-purpose function, incorporating both a storage area for hay and crops and stalls for cattle. Such barns typically have wide aisles, often nearly as wide as the nave, achieved by the use of relatively low-pitched roofs, and often separate doorways into the areas where cattle were stalled.
The northern three bays having been added in the 16th century.
