Whiston Meadows

An ideal place to walk. Whiston Meadows form a small part of the once extensive Rother Valley meadow land. Parts of the meadows are often inundated with water and this provides the perfect conditions for waders with Little Ringed Plover and Redshank both regular visitors to the area. The meadows also contain a number of interesting historic features including the remains of an old mill, an unusual historic bridge over the former course of Ulley Brook and Blue Man’s Bower. Today the meadows are used mostly for grazing cattle and horses and are a popular destination for local walkers.

Start outside The Chequers Public House, on Pleasley Road. Taking care cross over the road and follow the signed public footpath opposite the pub. Turn left and walk by the allotments then over a stone stile. Turn left over the footbridge then right through the swing gate into the Recreation Area. The path runs through the recreation ground alongside the brook. At about 100 metres from the gate there is a footpath climbing up the hillside on the left. Walking to the top of this to the pylon, gives a good view of the village. If you look up towards Bawtry Road, you can see the stone wall which was the boundary of Old Woodfoot Farm. Continuing through the recreation area leads to a wetlands area.

Continue straight ahead along the field edge path, from the car park, cross over Long Lane and follow the signed footpath into Whiston Meadows. There are details of the walks in the Meadows on the gates.

Turn immediately right or walk to the stream, Ulley Brook. One path leads to Moodys farm on Flatts Lane at Treeton. Another option is to follow the path which leads to the River Rother , past Blue Man's Bower, towards the M1 bridge, The old lane near the riding stables is where Howarth Hall was situated.
