Abson Family

Thomas Abson otherwise Thomson of Sheffield, will dated April 10 1512, was father of Nicholas and Alice.

1521 June 5th. The Will of Nicoles Abson of Sheffield, proved 21st July 1521 at York, directed that he should be buried in the Churchyard of Saints Peter and Paul Sheffield and for his mortuary his best horse. He gave to the High Altar 3s 4d; to every other Altar 2s; to Saint Katheryn Altar 2s; to Saint Nicholas Altar 2s ; to Saint Mary Altar 2s ; to an Antiphonar 40s ; to the Parish Church of Wath 6s 8d ; to the Parish Church of Tankersley 6s 8d ; to the mending of the Highway of Sheffeld More 3s 4d ; to the mending of the Highway betwixt Wirsop and Barnesley 3s 4d. He gave " a house of xs, that he had at Aterclif for evermore to have yerely two diriges to be sung for his " fader and moder," and himself, and his brother John Savill, and his sister Jenet Savill; to "Our Lady of Grace at Northamton to be prayed for " 6s 8d ; to Sir Thomas Sylvester the best gown that testator had, and his worstede dublet to Sir Herry Stafford his best dublet, the next best dublet to Richard Abson of Swynton, to Jeffray Hobson his "russett gabberdine." He made his wife Cecilie Abson "full executor and John Webster, and he to have £20 in money and of ware and household stuff £20. Richard Abson(1737-1803), son of Thomas (c1700) was christened 1st November, 1737 at Rotherham. He married Martha. Their son Thomas was christened 27/05/1764 at Rotherham.

Thomas Abson christened at Rotherham 27/05/1764 married Martha Craven 31/08/1788 at Rotherham.

Charles Abson, son of Thomas and Martha, was christened 12/10/1794 at Rotherham. He married Sarah about 1815. They had a daughter Mary Ann, born 20/10/1816 at Rotherham, and a son John, born 1825.

Mary Ann Abson married Samuel Bartholomew on 27/12/1836 at Rotherham. Source

George Abson, b.1804 Rotherham, and Mary Bell married in Whiston Parish Church in February 1829. Mary was born in 1805/6 in Wadworth, Doncaster, daughter of Tabitha Bell also born in Wadworth Doncaster. Tabitha married George Moss of Whiston on 25th March 1815 . Children born Whiston:

William Abson the son of George and Mary Abson of Whiston, was married twice,first to Ann who died in 1867, and secondly to Georgina Ross from Thrybergh, who was living in 1871.

Georgina born in 1817, was the daughter of James and Ann Ross of Thrybergh. James was a schoolmaster who published in 1817 'Wild Warblings'.

Georgina married William in 1868 at Whiston; they had 2 sons: Ernest, born 1872 and Wilfred, born 1874.

Living at Whiston in 1881 - with Elizabeth Clegg, a Widow, aged 50 from Finningley, were her son Alfred Abson aged 27, a Brass Fitter and her daughter Jane Abson aged 20, a Domestic Servant. Both were born in Whiston, both are unmarried.

By 1891 Alfred, a Brass Turner, had married Hannah from Somersham Huntingdonshire. Their children were born in Whiston:

Indenture of Bargain and Sale (Lat.) from Richard Browne of Mexburgh co York esquire, to Laurence Waide of Swinton co York yeoman, of a close of meadow in Swinton called Litle Tode Hode, lying between lands of the vendor and William Abson and the River Dune, then in the tenure of William Burton and others. Power of attorney to Richard Hanson of Wath to deliver seisin. The consideration was £2.

(1595) September 26th, in the 37th year of Elizabeth. Indenture of Bargain and Sale (Lat.) from Richard Browne of Mexborough co York esquire, to John Darley of the city of York gentleman, of two closes in Swinton, called Turne Riddinge alias Turne Royding, and Great Tode Hole. These closes are described. Personal Names : Richard Wortley esquire, Richard Bindley, William Abson. Place Names : Rotamford Flatts alias Milne Closes, the river Don.
