Joseph Armitage m. HENRIETTA DENTON 30 JUN 1766 at Treeton

 

JOSUA ARMITAGE, son of Joseph and Jane Armitage, was c.24 DEC 1786 Cathedral Saint Peter, Sheffield. He married Elizabeth STENTON on 26 NOV 1815 at Treeton. Their children were born at Whiston:

John Armitage, born about 1858, a stonemason married Hannah Jeavons born about 1861 in Dudley Staffordshire.

In 1891 they were living in Whiston with their children:

Notes re Hannnah Armitage. She had a brother William and a sister Martha, who married Frederick Clay.

 

Joshua Armitage, a Quarryman, born about 1853 in Sheffield, was living on The Green in 1891 with his wife Harriet and son Frederic.

Harold Armitage

Harold Armitage, a Publishing Editor and Author was born in Sheffield. He was Editor of The Citizen for a number of years. The author of Chantrey Land - about the Norton area of Sheffield (1910), Sorrelsykes - reminiscences of his childhood in Whiston and Treeton(1913), and Early Man in Hallamshire - an archaelogical study of the Sheffield District.

Sorrelsykes has some stories about his great grandfather and the Stentons who for some time lived and worked for the Boomer's at Spa Farm, Treeton. He describes what is probably Guilthwaite Hall and Brampton Old Hall, as well as many other reminiscences of Whiston and Treeton. Full text of a Mummers play 'The Peace Egg' performed in Whiston is included.

He was the son of William Armitage and Betsy. William was born in Whiston and in 1881 a teacher at a Public Elementary School at Heeley, Sheffield. Harold was born at Heeley, in 1867. William and Betsy had three other children: Louis, born 1863 and in 1881 was an Assistant at the public Elementary School, Ethel, born 1869 and Beatrice born 1876.

Harold married Jeanie Johnson Cameron who was born in Bristol. They had a son Angus, born in 1903 in Holmesfield, Derbyshire. In 1911 Harold and family, including his mother-in-law Jessie Wright Cameron from Comrie, Perthshire, were living at Letchworth, Hertfordshire.

 

Early Record - The first record I have found of an Armitage in Whiston is: Thomas Armitage who married a Susannah Renshaw on 18 DEC 1793 at Whiston, Yorkshire. Source IGI Index
