    Lily Bartholomew

Arthur Foers, Lilan's father ran the Ball Inn, his wife died and he was left with 4 children and by 1911 his brother-in-law George Scales was running the pub. Lilian was born in the Ball Inn as were her 2 children, Dennis and Philip. Her husband James, was still in the army. They lived there until about 1923 when they moved the old flood yard where they had the coal business. The house was demolished about 1960.

    Lily Bartholomew remembers

Lily Bartholomew (Nee Foers), wife of James William, recalled some of her memories in 1953. She was then age 71 and living at 64 Pleasley Road, a 300 year old grey stone house at the site of the old Floodyard.

Her husband James used to work the pump at the well to feed the Rectory. She remembered the old Whiston Fairs, and the Bonfires which were the high spot of the year. Everybody in the village used to go. At Christmas mummers and tuppers used to go round all the houses. The tuppers were men who dressed in cow skins, who sang and acted a sort of ritual performance.

She also recalled the old days when a horse bus used to go twice a week to Rotherham. The driver did not set off until he was sure everyone who wanted to go to Rotherham was on board. He would wait as long as half an hour for a latecomer and would even send someone round the streets to make sure no one had been left behind !
