Whiston Families

Clay family

Extract from 1881 census:

Charles Clay was born about 1827 in Faversham, Kent, England. It is not known when he came to Whiston, but Charles is listed in White's Directory of 1862 as a Wholesale and Retail Grocer, Tea dealer and Provisions merchant. He married Elizabeth Martin in 1857, she was born in Whiston about 1827.

The 1881 census records that they have two children, Annie N. aged 22 and Frederic Lawson aged 19 who worked as an assistant in the Grocer's shop.

Hannah JEAVONS,aged 19, from Dudley in Staffordshire, lived with the family as a Servant. She later married John Armitage.

Fred Clay

 

Fred Clay married Martha Jeavons in 1906, they had 2 children Charles Frederick Martin, b.1907, and Kathleen Mary,b.1910.

Charles F.M. married Minnie Inman,in 1935,they had a son Martin, born 1937

Frederick Lawson Clay was a grocer living at Pitt St Holmes Rotherham in 1911
