Whiston Families
Clay
Edwin Clay, and his family came to farm in Whiston from Shirland in 1923. ( A William Clay of Shirland Park died in 1871). In the 1911 Census - at Shirland Park Farm, with Edwin (29) and wife Rose Emily (26 nee Burton) was Harrold (2), Kitty (2) and Edwin (4 months). Rose Emily Clay died in 1939.

Edwin married his second wife Isobel (Nee Montgomery) in 1941 and they lived at Whiston Hall before moving to Cedar House on Moorgate Road. Edwin was Secretary of the Rotherham branch of the Farmers Union for 40 years and a Parish Councillor for 20 years. His son Edwin, ran the farm after his father left. The family had land at the bottom of the Green, next to Merryweather's land and farmed Whiston Hall Farm and Woodfoot Farm.
Harold, farmed Woodfoot Farm, and Kitty died in her 20s of pneumonia.
Another son of Edwin, John Samson Clay, known as Jack, married in 1933 to Marian Fieldsend, who lived on Moorhouse Lane. Marian had 2 brothers and 2 sisters, Marjorie, who went to live in Wath-on-Dearne, and Jessie, pictured on the Schools page. Soon after their marriage Jack and Marian had a son, Derek.

There was a Blacksmith's just inside the Whiston Hall farmyard - the farrier a Mr. Gibson. This was eventually knocked down and Jack built a wooden Betting Office there which he later sold. During the war, Jack was head of the Fire Service in Whiston and he used to deliver the milk in an Austin 7 with a trailer complete with water-pump. Jack also known as the 'Whistling Milkman', was at one time, captain of the Whiston Casuals Cricket team who played in the field at the bottom of Guilthwaite Hill. Jack died aged 55 on 18th December, 1967.

Working at the farm during this time was Stan Pearson the tractor driver, Bill and Jim Hartley, Bob Dunkley, Fred Holmes (lived on Hillside), Alan Clark, and Jack Holmes - the Cowman who at one time, lived opposite the Sitwell Public House.
Edwin Clay was married to Elizabeth Mary, known as Betty, (Nee Twibell) of Dinnington. After Edwin died, Betty had a bungalow built on the farm. Betty died September 25th 2011, aged 92. She was sister of Arthur Twibell of Dinnington and probably connected to William Twibell of Lindrick House and A. Twibell of Dinnington.
Edwin ran the farm which was part dairy, Jack had two milk rounds distributing milk from the farm in and around Whiston. Alice Foulstone, worked for Mr. Clay, as a milk lady delivering milk covering an area from Moorgate to Rotherham. Rita Morgan delivered milk along Broom Lane. A lady called Margaret, from Kimberworth, also delivered milk. It is thought she had previously delivered milk for Mr. Pike of The Pieces.

The small building attached to the Hall on the right hand side, seen on the sketch above, was referred to as "the old dairy". Old Mr Clay used it as an office.
The working dairy in use at the time was situated opposite the Hall. The milk rounds were, years later, sold to Keith Kettleborough the Rotherham footballer.
Derek Clay was born at The Floodyard, after attending Whiston School he worked on the farm for a few years before joining the forces. After leaving the forces, he worked for Hastings, the furniture store in Rotherham, first as a delivery driver then as a salesman for 7 years. During this time Derek lived at 14 Flatt Lane and after he was married, he lived at 6 Savile Road. He was a member of the Hind Fishing Club being Chairman in 1970. He left Whiston in 1972 and lived at Kiveton Park for a few years. Moving on, Derek became a Gamekeeper, at Walkeringham and later Newlands Farm House at Epworth, now converted into Holiday Homes, before retiring to Lincolnshire.
Harold Clay, the eldest son, had 3 children, a daughter and 2 sons. One of his sons left Whiston to farm in Somerset and the other is a lecturer at York University.
