Whiston Families

Goucher

Thomas Goucher, an Agricultural Labourer, was born in 1807 in Whitwell, Derbys.In 1826, he married Sarah Barnes ( b.1808), a Laundress, from Arnold, Notts. They had 8 children. They were living in the village in 1871 with a granddaughter Emma aged 5. Thomas died 1875 at Rotherham and Sarah died 1880 at Rotherham.

Thomas Goucher was born in 1831. He worked as an agricultural labourer for Mr. Waring at Howarth Lodge. In July, 1853, he was sentenced for 4 months hard labour for throwing stones at an engine on the Midland Railway at Brinsworth.

  3. Thomas (1831-1891) Born Rotherham, married Sarah Ellis in 1855, died Whiston
  4. John (1833-1908) Born Whiston, married Sarah Jane Longden from Bramley. He died in Rotherham.
  5. Anne (1836-1839) Born Rotherham, died Whiston
  6. Emma (1840) Born and died Whiston
  7. Elizabeth Born 1841
  8. Charles (1845-1921) Born Treeton, died Rotherham

Thomas (b 1832) and Sarah (b1836) Goucher (nee Ellis), living at 118 the Village, in Whiston in 1871, had 9 children all born in Whiston:

Children of John (1833-1908) and Sarah Jane Goacher (1836-1909) Nee Longden living at Catcliffe Cottages in 1871: (Spelling Goacher in 1871 and 1881 census)

John was a labourer and looking at places of birth of children, they moved around depending on work available.

James Goucher(1861-1940), Agricultural Labourer, married Martha Ann Marshall (1868-1904) in 1883. Children:

In 1891 they were living at 1 Brookside Whiston.

Gertrude Marshall/Goucher (1882-1939) married Frederick Charles Wadsworth (1864-1925) b. Bramley; died R.U.W, buried Pauper's grave, Moorgate Cemetery. Gertrude of The Green, Whiston, died in 1939

 

In 1909, Sarah Goucher, aged 73, a widow of Pinfold Cottage, Whiston, was found dead in the Whiston Brook. Read the story Whiston Septuagenarian Drowned
