Hitchen Family
James Hitchen born 1806 married Mary Cooper (b.1811) at Rotherham. They had a son George.
George HITCHEN was born in 1843 in Barnsley, South Yorkshire. On the 1861 census he is not living with his family, he is living with Thomas Swaine, Shoemaker and family, in Darton, Barnsley. He is listed as an Apprentice Shoemaker. On both the 1891 and 1901 census for Guilthwaite, he is still listed as a Shoe and Boot Maker .
George married Sarah Rayner, born 1846, from Kilnhurst, Rotherham. They had at least seven children:
- James Arthur, born in 1871 at Rotherham, married Betsey Copley
- George, born in 1872 at Rotherham, married Flora Hague (b.1872 Rotherham)
- John, born in 1875 at Rosedale Abbey, Yorkshire
- Robert born in 1877 at Rotherham married Emily Coe
- Henry born in 1879 at Rotherham
- William born in 1882 at Brinsworth, Yorkshire, married Mary Ede (b. 1884 Wales). 8 children
- Wilfred Percy born in 1886 at Brinsworth, Yorkshire, married Elizabeth M. O'Mahon (c.1886). 1 son.
On the 1881 census George and family were living at 72 Drummond Street, Rotherham
By 1891 they were living at 13 Guilthwaite. It is noted, he was now an Employer.
James Arthur Hitchen married Betsey Copley in 1899 at Rotherham. In 1901 Census James lived next door to brother Robert on Guilthwaite Hill, the other neighbour was John Willam Foers. Children:
- William Hitchen b. 1900 at Guilthwaite, married Elsie Cutts. 2 children.

- Harold Hitchen b.1907
- Percy Hitchen b. 1910
Children of George and Flora (Nee Hague):
- Wilfred b.1894
- Elsie b.1898, married Samuel K. Howlett (b.1899)
Robert Hitchen married Emily Coe around 1900.
According to the 1901 census, Robert and Emily were
living in Whiston.
They were living at Bole Hill, Treeton in early 1900s.
Children of Robert and Emily:
- Gladys (1901-1942) married George Sheard
- Ernest b.1903- moved to Treeton
- Stephen b.1906(not married)
- Gilbert b.1918(not married)
Children of William and Mary (Nee Ede):
- Nellie b.1908 married Patrick Ford(b.1908)
- James Hitchen b.1910 married Ethel Wright(b.1911)
- Sylvia Hitchen b.1912
- William Henry Hitchen (1914-1990) married Muriel Gagen. 2 children
- Mary Hitchen b.1916
- Stanley Hitchen b.1918 married Betty Green (1925-2005). 10 children
- Dennis Hitchen b.1920
- Vera b.1920 married Jack Greaves
On the 1901 census, they had moved and were living in Guilthwaite.

Gladys Hitchen married George Sheard and they had 3 children:
- Sheila
- Kathleen who has recently passed away
- Gerald Hayden Sheard died 2004
Gladys Hitchen died in her 40's
George Sheard then married Elizabeth Carey.
