Whiston Families

Hoyland of Wentworth and Whiston

In the early 1600s George Hoyland of Wath held land at Wath, Brampton Bierlow, Westnall and Bradfield. George died about 1630 and he left his land to the use of son William Hoyland (Will dated Feb. 22, 1641.), with remainder to Thomas Hoyland, 3rd son. John Hoyland of Dungworth, Bradfield, yeoman was eldest son and heir of George Hoyland, and he gave to to William Hoyland, his brother, of all his title to a messuage and lands at Wath which were conveyed to William by their father.

George and William Hoyland of Wath were tanners in the 1700s. William had daughters Ann m. Richard Gawtress of Wath, tanner; Jane m. Robert Ellis of Adwick-le-Street, yeoman; Elizabeth m. Robert Foster of Brampton.
