When she was 28, she left Whiston and sailed from Liverpool to Laredo, a Texan town on the Rio Grande, where she married Mr. Kimber who had been a regular visitor to her families home in Whiston until he emigrated. Eleanor had corresponded with him after he left Whiston.

Ten years later Eleanor returned to Whiston, a widow, with 2 children. She wrote a book 'Youthful Memories of Whiston' .

Eleanor was the grandaughter of John Howitt Scurrah and Ellen Elliot.
