Whiston Families

Smith of Herringthorpe Cottage, Whiston

Percy Smith was born about 1830 in Sheffield, he was a Flax Merchant and served as Justice of The Peace for the West Riding of Yorkshire

His family were living in Rotherham by 1861, and came to Whiston between 1865 and 1872. He is listed in White's Directory of 1879. In 1881 the census tells us, his wife is Marianne, aged 50, also from Sheffield. They have four daughters:

  1. Amy Percy Smith, unmarried, aged 20, born Rotherham
  2. Katherine Percy Smith, unmarried, aged 19 born Rotherham
  3. Janet Percy Smith, unmarried, aged 17 born Rotherham
  4. Mildred Percy Smith, unmarried, aged 9, born at Whiston

They employed a Cook, Ellen Hopkinson Greaves aged 25 from Dore, Sheffield; a Housemaid, Emily Wilkinson aged 18 from Sheffield; and a Parlour Maid, Mary Jane Roberts aged 16 from Wadsley, Sheffield.

They were living at Herringthorpe Cottage.
