Whiston Families

Revell Family of Whiston

The Revell family have been in Whiston since the early 1500's at least. Richard Revell was from about 1689, the Earl of Shrewsbury's Keeper of the Woods, a survey in 1719 tells us there was 240 acres of woodland in Whiston. Was Revel Wood named after him?

Thomas Revell, born about 1560 in Whiston,and Miss Denton, born about 1564 married in Whiston about 1590. They had eight children:

  1. Thomas Revell, born about 1591(of Brampton), Yorkshire. Married Rose Knepe 29 MAY 1606 ( Source , daughter Mabel born 11 OCT 1608 (Source IGI)
  2. Ann Revell, christened about 1592, Whiston
  3. Maria Revell, christened about 1593, Whiston
  4. Sarah Revell, christened about 1600 Whiston
  5. William Revell, christened about 1601 Whiston, Burial: 1602
  6. Richard Revell, christened about 1604 Whiston, Burial: 1608
  7. Richard Revell, christened about 1609 Whiston, Burial: 1609
  8. John Revell, christened about 1612 Whiston, Burial: 4th March,1667/8 Whiston

Was Rose Knepe daughter of John Knype who m. Ann Wainwright 14 July 1588 Rotherham?)

There is a possibility of a connection with the Cawthorne family of Whiston. Yorkshire Marriage Register has Robert Cawthorne m. Elizabeth Revel 12 July 1590 at Rotherham

Thomas Revel of Whiston had 5 children: (Refer also to MS172

Henry Bate, MA., was instituted to the Rectory of Aston 17 October, 1605. He married in 1607, Ellen Hardstaff of Aston. He died on 7th September, 1627

Sarah Dickenson of Rotherham, widow, in her will dated 6 April 1679, names Nathaniel Revel of Brampton and John, Nathaniel, Thomas and Henry his sons, and Rebecca Hurst of Dalton, brother and sister, as her nephew and niece; also nieces Mary Garland and Elizabeth Soresby, Sarah Fairburn, and her children Samuel and Jane, niece Sara Ward, deceased, and her children Catherine, Sarah, Thomas, Will, Mary, Henry, also several Burroughes as her cousins, niece, Mary Buroughs.

John Revell(b1612) married Elizabeth (B 1611.Burial 15 APR 1657 Whiston).

Nathaniel Revel of Brampton, born about 1630 of Brampton-en-le-Morthern married 05 OCT 1652 at Braithwell to Alice, daughter of Nathaniel (1598-1659) and Alice Eyre of Bramley Hall Children (named in the Will of his sister Sarah Dickenson :

Tristram Revel, parish of Rotherham, labourer, m. Mary Mercer, of Whiston 12 Nov 1713

 

Robert Stacye, the son and heir of Mahlon and Philippa, succeeded his father as Lord of the Manor of Owlerton. He married Margaret Rawson, sister of Thomas Rawson. The youngest daughter Alice born in 1639, at Handsworth, married John Revell, of Whiston, gent, on 7 Sep 1657, at Sheffield. Children:

Julianna was daughter of Richard Clarke of the Angel Inn in Chesterfield and Cutthorpe, and Ann Shaw, d.7 Jan.1690-1. She was sister of Sir Samuel Clarke of West Bromwich, County Stafford, Sheriff of London and Middlesexin 1712.

Notes re Ephraim Auckland : he was son of Ephraim AUCKLAND, b. 1713 Gainsbro', Lincs. m. 1743 Hatfield, Yks. Dorothy REASBECK, 1724 from S. Kelsey, Lincs. Family came to Rotherham from Hatfield between 1754-1757.

Nathaniel Revel of Whiston or Rotherham, had a daughter Martha, who married Thomas Rasine (d.1656), Alderman of Doncaster, son of Lord Mayor of Pontefract.
