Whiston Families

Revell

The Revell's were in Whiston, and Brampton-en-le-Morthen from at least the late 1500s. Yorkshire Marriage Registers have Revell marriages from 1576 in Rotherham, from 1582 in Anston.

There is a Revell House and a Revel Wood (seven and a half acres) in Whiston.

Revell of Brinsworth

Robert Cawthorne . m. Margaret Revel 12 July 1590 at Rotherham. Margaret was sister of Rowland Revell (Will 1623) who married Agnes Vescy in June 1590. The other sister Elizabeth married Michael Vescy of Brinsworth.

Margaret, Elizabeth and Rowland were children of Rowland Revell of Brinsworth, will dated 1599, who may have been the son of William Revell of Brinsworth (d.1560)

The will of Rowland Revell is dated 1623 and he mentions land in Worsborough Dale, his daughter Elizabeth, wife of Hugh Taylor, cousin Thomas Revell of Whiston and his son Thomas Revell, cousin William Revell of Cudworth, Elizabeth Revell and Margaret Revell of Cudworth, cousin Elizabeth Hanson, wife of Mr Jarvis Hanson, Roland Revell son of William Revell of the Rickett Feild, Bradfield, Richard Norton and his wife, and the poor people of Whiston.

A Thomas Denton listed in Harrisons Survey of 1637 Could be the Thomas Denton recorded in Rotherham Parish Registers who married Ann Reniell(Revell) 15 May 1598?

 

Sarah Dickenson of Rotherham, widow, in her will dated 6 April 1679, names Nathaniel Revel of Brampton and John, Nathaniel, Thomas and Henry his sons, and Rebecca Hurst of Dalton, brother and sister, as her nephew and niece; also nieces Mary Garland and Elizabeth Soresby, Sarah Fairburn, and her children Samuel and Jane, niece Sara Ward, deceased, and her children Catherine, Sarah, Thomas, Will, Mary, Henry, also several Burroughes as her cousins, niece, Mary Buroughs.

John Revell(b1612) married Elizabeth (B 1611.Burial 15 APR 1657 Whiston).

Nathaniel Revel of Brampton, born about 1630 of Brampton-en-le-Morthern married 05 OCT 1652 at Braithwell to Alice, daughter of Nathaniel (1598-1659) and Alice Eyre of Bramley Hall Children (named in the Will of his sister Sarah Dickenson) :

A Nathaniel Revel was buried 1701 at Treeton

It is recorded that Samuel Revell c.1693 at Treeton was the son of John and Juliana.

John Revell, the younger of Whiston, curator, married on 7 Sep 1657, at Sheffield to Alice, daughter of Robert Stacye, the son and heir of Mahlon and Philippa, who succeeded his father as Lord of the Manor of Owlerton. Richard Revell was from about 1689, the Earl of Shrewsbury's Keeper of the Woods, a survey in 1719 tells us there was 240 acres of woodland in Whiston.
