Before the development of the Greystones Estate, Joseph Rhodes farmed at Manor Farm, on Moorhouse Lane, Whiston.
Joseph came from a well respected family - he was nick named Old Bony Rhodes because he was tall and very thin. He married in 1896 to Eliza Hayward (b.1870 Beighton). They had 5 children all born at The Herdings, Sheffield:
- Frances Annie (1897-1968)
- Gladys May (1899-1976)
- John Joseph b.1901
- Sarah Elizabeth Grace (1903-1982)
- Harry (1904-1907)
Frances married Harold Cottam(1893-1987) and they had a daughter Frances Mary who married a White.
Gladys was the Headmistress of the village infant school. It is said was a terror as she would patrol the village and any child up to mischief would know about it at school the next day!
In the 40s and 50s they kept a huge bull at the farm, and children playing on Moorhouse Lane would soon be chased off by one of the sisters when approaching the farm to look at the bull; if they were not around, there was a flock of geese who would see you off!
