Whiston Families

Roddis Family

It has been suggested that the Roddis family of Whiston and Wickersley, descended from the family of De Rodes. Gerard de Rodes, was a prominent baron who lived in the reigns of Henry II, Richard I, John and Henry III

Ricardus de Rodes, and his wife, Cristiana are listed in the Subsidy Rolls of 1379.

Early Charters

1506 - November 20th, in the 22nd year of Henry VII. Charter dated at Woodthorpe, confirming a grant from Thomas Parker son of Robert Parker late of Ryley to Ralph Frechewell of Brymyngton, of lands and tenements in the lordship of Staley, then in the tenure of Richard Rodez; with power of attorney to Robert Rodez, John Marten and Thomas Robyn to deliver seisin. Witnesses: Thomas Foljambe, Nicholas Walshe, Richard Rodez.

In 1750 John, Samuel and William Roddis were Stonemasons living in Whiston. An Assignment of lease dated 28 May 1777 shows their connection with 2 delph quarries in the area:
Robert Roddis of Whiston and William Porter of the same, masons, to Joseph Bower of Sheffield, cutler, William Birks of the same, razorsmith, John Turner of the same, cutler, and John Barlow of the same, cutler. A delph quarry in Wickersley in Pinchwell Field and another delph quarry lying westward. For the residue of a term of 21 years. For £150

Further references from Rotherham Archives:

In 1775 Mary Siddal of Aston, widow of Henry Siddal, granted a lease to John Roddis of Oil Mill Fold, Rotherham, mason, for £34, of 3 messuages in Westgate with the west end of the fold or garden and half the passage to Westgate. John Roddis, father of John Roddis of Mill Ridge, Dacre, Cumberland, Mason, had a stone quarry (1 acre) at Bunting Croft, Rotherham. In 1775, Bunting Croft was purchased by John Roddis off Joseph Cozens. for his own use Sarah Roddis, widow of John Roddis (the elder) married Richard White, a Mason. In 1777 it seems that Thomas Roddis of Rotherham, mason was owner of Bunting Croft with the dwelling house, stone quarry, with the messuage thereon. Edward Roddis of Greystock, Cumberland, Gent was recorded as the owner in 1778 and by 1796, he was dead and his widow Elizabeth Roddis of Homlacey, Hereford, appointed on trust, part of Bunting Croft to James Kilner of Doncaster, gent

John Roddis mentioned above, married MARY HOGGART on 11 JUN 1770 at Greystoke, Cumberland.

In 1754, John Roddis, Gent, of Little Lynford was sold the Crown and Castle Estate in the parish of Sherrington. John, a grocer by trade was from Hampton, in Surrey.

Roddis Quarries

In 1780 John Roddis and his wife Dorothy (Nee Storkey) of Upper Whiston, owned quarries in Whiston, Ulley and Wickersley. Along with an uncle William, they were forerunners of local quarry ownership.

After the death of John in 1814, his son William took over the business and opened the Brecks Quarries.

In 1840 William died and his son William continued the business along with his mother Elizabeth who was quarrymistress of a number of quarries in the area.

Thomas Roddis of Wickersley inherited the business and proved to be very successful.
