Whiston Families
Scurrah of Well and Whiston
The Scurrah family came from Well in Yorkshire.
William Joseph Scurrah, was born 1802/3, at Well, Yorkshire, he was the son of Christopher Scurrah and Mary (Nee Lazenby) of Well, Yorkshire. (according to Family Search they had 8 children). He married Ann HOWITT on 31 Jul 1825 at Leeds St Peter, Yorkshire.
It is not known when this part of the family moved from Well, but William Joseph, in 1842, was 'of Sheffield', a bricklayer and furnace builder. In 1862, he was in Whiston, when he leased 2 cottages and part of a garden and orchard previously held by Thomas Abson of Whiston, mason. Later in 1862, he was in possession of 3 newly erected houses (on the site of the 2 cottages), with the vacant land
William and Ann had a daughter Dinah Emma Scurrah, who married into the Bartholomew family; daughter Jane E. and a son John.
By 1881 William Joseph, now retired, and a widower, was living next door to his son John, with his grandaughter and housekeeper, Jane EVANS, born 1863 in Whiston.

His son, John Howitt Scurrah (1833-1911), a Stone Mason, was born in Leeds in 1833. He married Helena (Ellen) Elliott (1835-1886) from Whiston. Helena was the daughter of Timothy and Letitia Elliott. In 1871 they were living at Whiston with three children who were born in Whiston.

By 1881 daughter Helena had left the family home.
By 1891 John H, is now a widower, living at 109 Brookside, next door to the Rodgers family. Living with him was his daughter Annie, single, now age 21, and John E H Scurrah,grandson aged 1, born in Whiston.
Jane Elizabeth (1861-1906) married Clement Rodgers
In 1879 a Joseph Scurrah, was a Beer Retailer, at Herringthorpe.
