In 1953 Albert Shaw, aged 71 was living at 19 Birchall Avenue. Born In Whiston, he was a well known cricket all-rounder and umpire. He was known locally as the 'Memory man'. In 1953 when interviewed by the Rotherham Advertiser, he spoke of his memories of Whiston.

He recalled when there was enough trout in the Brook, to provide breakfast, dinner and tea. He also spoke of the Meadows, the area of land at the lower end of the village which used to get flooded to a depth of several feet. He said it was the finest spot for bathing for miles around! In the winter they used to go skating there for weeks on end.
