Whiston Families

Thackry

Joseph Thackry was born 1812 at Herringthorpe, a Farm Labourer. In 1881 he was living in Whiston, by now a widower, with his unmarried daughter Fanny Thackry, born 1853, age 28, also born at Herringthorpe. Gertrude Thackry, grand daughter, born 1876 at Brampton-en-le-Morthen also lives with them.

Living nearby at the Post Office in 1881 is Ann Thackry, born 1807, unmarried, age 74, born Rotherham - Post Mistress. Her niece, Mary Belk,born 1831, Brampton-en-le-Morthen, age 50 and John B. Brown, Adopted, unmarried age 23, born 1858 at Whiston, a Commercial Clerk in Gas Works.

 

Probate of Joseph Thackry of Herringthorpe, in the Parish of Whiston, farmer:
his close at Wickersley (1 acre 1 rood) to his brother Edward Thackry and John Jarvis, upon trust to sell, the proceeds to form part of his personal estate.
his house and closes at Herringthorpe (7 acres) with all other his real and personal estate, to his wife until his son Joseph is 21 and then to Joseph, charged with the support of his wife and with the payment of £50 to his daughters Mary and Sarah at 21.
Will dated 24 March 1822.Proved at York, 16 November 1822.

Edward, Joseph's brother, was living in Brampton-en-le-Morthen in 1851, he was 81 years of age and farming 81 acres with the help of 3 labourers. His unmarried sister, Mary, aged 91 was living with him.

 

Sarah (daughter and devisees of Joseph Thackry) married Benjamin Ward of farmer from Wickersley.

Also living at Brampton, George (b.abt 1803 at the Ickles) and his wife Charlotte Thackray (b.abt 1805 at Maltby). Next door but one, was William Thackray, farming 15 acres. He was a widower in 1851; aged 50 also born at Ickles. Living with William:
