Whiston Families
Westby of Guilthwaite
Robert Sanderson bought an estate at Guilthwaite from Gregory Starkie, of Markham, Nottinghamshire. By Indenture, dated October 3, 1603, he conveyed this to George Westby, yeoman, for £710.
George Westby (d.1671) of Guilthwaite married Alice Stringer(d.1685). Children:

- James Westby of Over Whiston

James Westby of Over Whiston, son of George of Guilthwaite and Alice (Nee Stringer), was baptised August 1668. He married Martha and was buried at Whiston 16 April 1695. Martha remarried October 31 1703, to Robert Nauton of Whiston.

George Westby of Guilthwaite and Howarth was Captain in the Dragoon Guards. He inherited the estate of Howarth from his great-aunt, Dorcas Westby, married to John Laughton of Howarth Grange Esq
Catherine Hirst was the daughter of John Hirst of The Clough, Rotherham and Elizabeth, daughter of Richard Kent of Kimberworth.
The Yorkshire estates of Clough House, Howarth, Kimberworth and Guilthwaite Hall, of the Hirst , Kent, Westby and Laughton families were inherited by Henry John Shirt, afterwards Hirst. He changed his name to Hirst in compliance with the will of his mother's cousin John Hirst of Clough who died 1804.
