History
Whiston in 1856
Whiston is a considerable village in a pleasant valley, 6 miles east by north of Sheffield and 2 miles south by east of Rotherham. Its parish has about 1000 inhabitants, and 3780 acres of land of which Sir S. R. Sitwell is lord and principal owner, though the Duke of Norfolk owns Canklow Wood, 243 acres, and is said to be lord paramount, - the manor being anciently held by the Furnivals and considered part of Hallamshire.
The rectory and schools stand on a bold rocky eminence above the village.
The hamlets in the parish are Canklow, Guilthwaite, Herringthorpe, Moorgate and Morthen.
