Whiston in 1879
Whiston is a considerable village and parish in a pleasant valley 6 miles east by north of Sheffield and 2 miles south by east of Rotherham and is in The Rotherham Union and county court district. Its parish contains 3189 acres and had 1278 inhabitants in 1871, but its township extends into Rotherhan Parish, having an area of 3948 acres and at that time a population of 1317. It includes the hamlets of Canklow, Guilthwaite, Herringthorpe, Moorgate and Morthen.
The church - St. James, is a neat structure in the Perpendicular style, and the living is a rectory valued at £869. The Earl of Effingham, who is the chief landowner, is patron of the benefice and the Hon. Rev. Wm Howard, M.A., J.P., Canon of York, is the incumbent.
Here is a Wesleyan Chapel, built in 1866, at a cost of £900.
The National School was built in 1873 at a cost of £850 and will accomodate 220 scholars/
Post Office is at Miss Ann Thackray's. Letters are received at 7 a.m. and despatched at 5.55 p.m., via Rotherham, which is the nearest Money Order Office and Railway Station.
