Blacksmiths
In 1750 Charles Ashley, was the village blacksmith, he was still listed in 1822. By 1833 Abraham Howard, was a blacksmith living at Moorhouse, and George Kirk, was a blacksmith at Morthen. Chas Askin was blacksmith and Beer House owner and John Street was also listed.
In 1849, John Bilbrough, Esther Street and George Walker of Guilthwaite were blacksmiths.
In 1859 John Barns, was a blacksmith at Moorhouse and Esther Street was still listed.
By 1862 William Street, Esther's son had taken over, he was still trading in 1881 when Tom Hill was lodging with the family - an apprentice blacksmith.
The 1891 census shows William Roddis living at 41, Main Street was a blacksmith. William Street was at Whiston Smithy and at Wood View on The Green lived Charles Cockayne,blacksmith.
William Street must have died sometime between 1891 and 1901 when Mrs Elizabeth Street, was blacksmith and by 1905 Mrs Emma Street his daughter.
John Street was blacksmith from 1841 until 1848. By 1851 his widow Esther is listed as blacksmith. By 1861 son William is Blacksmith and on the 1891 census they have John Corbett as a visitor - he was a brass finisher born Codnor, Derbyshire. By 1901 he has married Louisa Street and is now the village Blacksmith as his father in law William Street has died.
The old forge was behind the Post Office where they built the Parish Hall. On the gravestone of John Corbett, are blacksmiths tools.
