History
Melrose Cottages
Melrose Cottages were built about 1842. There was a stone above the door of the three cottages in a row with a curved headstone that used to be a passage with entrance to the backs but was never used, so the shop house used it as their coal store
William Tabby Jervis lived in one of Melrose cottages. He was noted as the last person to be placed in Whiston Stocks in 1870.
Eleanor L. Kimber lived in Melrose Cottages as a child.

The one up one room down cottages were lit by gas and had a cold water tap only.
The Barefoot family lived in Melrose Cottages until 1946 when they moved to a new house on Hall Close Avenue. It was about this time that Melrose Cottages became known as Church Hill - the Post Office had requested a review after their postmen became confused ! Quarry House was part of Melrose Cottages.
Taken in 1970 when Cowrakes Lane was made wider.

Numbers 4 and 5 Melrose Cottages were demolished about 1961.
