Rev. George R. Newton
George Robert Newton was born in the Sept quarter of 1883 in Wales Yorkshire to Frederick Newton, a miner and Emily Newton (nee Burgin), he was the 6th of 8 children.
Family - Living at (R & P Road) Pigeon Bridge, Waleswood Colliery, Yorkshire in 1881:
- Frederick Newton, father, born 1859 at Killamarsh, aged 22 a Coal Miner
- Emily, mother born 1855 Fenton, Lincolnshire, age 26
- William E. Burgin, Stepson born 1877 at Sheffield
- Samuel D. Newton born 1880 at Waleswood
George joined the regular army at the age of 18 and in 1901 was stationed at Caterham in Surrey with the Coldstream Guards.
It seems that he left the army to study for the church at St Boniface College, Warminster, in 1911; and according to his medal card he rejoined in 1914 as a corporal. Later he was a lieutenant with the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry and was a captain when he left again in 1920 to resume his clerical studies at Kings College, London.
He married later in life and had 2 sons, one was a librarian in Birmingham in the 1950s or later and the other became Director of Education in Kenya at about the same time.
Rev. George Newton served at Whiston from 1939 until 1947 and lived at the Old Vicarage, Wales, after he retired, where his parents Emily and Fred had been living for some time.
