Schools
The first record of a school was in 1728. It was situated near the Rectory and run by Frances Mansel.This was
replaced by Saville Road School in 1961.
There are records of a Gents Boarding School in Moorgate, in 1834, owned by Sarah Eversfield and conducted by Jas.
Appleton. In 1849 Elizabeth Davison, ran the Boarding School
The National School
The National School was built in 1873 at a cost of £850 to accomodate 220 scholars
In 1849 William Dixon, was teaching at the National School, in 1856, William Bywater and in 1862 Mary Brown;
in 1890 alterations were made costing £258, by Rev. Thomas Atkinson; the school had a population of 210 and a
clerical income of £268. The attendance was 158.

From 1929 to 1935, Oliver Evans, pictured below, was a teacher, at the primary school, Whiston. He moved to teach at
Wickersley Secondary in the early 50s

During the 1940s and well into 1950s, Miss Rhodes was the Headmistress of the
village infant school, she was a terror as she would patrol the village and any child up to mischief would know about it at
school next day!

Can anyone identify date and people? One of the children is possibly a Yeardley

Miss Townsend was also cub mistress. Peter and David Townsley were twins, they had a brother Michael. Peter Burgin had a sister called Pat who worked on
the buses, she married Michael Howley from Catcliffe then went to South Africa. Geoffry Emeny had an older brother,
Charlie and a sister Jacqueline. Roy Gilberthorpe's older sister was Anne, Michael Clark had an older brother Alan and
younger sister Susan.
They lived next to the shop run by George Clark (the cousin of their father William) and
his wife who had a shop on High Street at Hungerhill bottom. Their Great Grandfather George Clark was the Innkeeper of the
Chequers, listed in the 1891 and 1901 census.

Savile Rd School was founded in 1961 with Mr Merriman as Junior School Head
Miss Rhodes continued as Headmistress of the infants also Miss Rowbottom who had taught infants at the old village school.

Whiston Worry Goose School opened on 3rd September, 1969 when there were 4 teachers, including Mr. Davies, Mrs. Hern and Mrs. Bissell and 160 pupils. Mr. Crossley
was headmaster from 1969 until 1978. Later teachers were Mr. Norton and Mrs. Fox.
