History
Poll Tax for 1379
Poll taxes were levied on individuals rather than property or wealth, with everyone over a certain age,(16 for the Poll Tax of 1379), being liable to pay a given amount.
A large amount of the raised went on military spending. The most notable taxes were those granted in 1377, 1379 and 1380, the last of these being a major factor in the outbreak of the Peasants' Revolt in 1381.
Many records have survived, the most detailed being the Poll Tax of 1379. All known surviving receipts and assessments from these fourteenth-century taxes have been recorded in The Poll Taxes of 1377, 1379 and 1381
