Land for sale at Auction

1823

 

Including a Manor extending over Three Thousand Acres of Fertile Land, in the West-Riding of the County of York, late the Estates of the most Noble Charles Duke of Norfolk, deceased.

To be sold by Auction, by Mr. T. N. Bardwell., on Tuesday, the 4th day of November next, at the Tontine Inn, Sheffield, at 10 o'clock, in the under mentioned, or such other Lots as may be then determined, and subject to conditions to be then produced:

In the Parish of Whiston, in the County of York

Lot 1

House, Outbuildings, Garden etc. in the occupation of Mrs. Oxley, under a lease, for a term of which 25 years are yet unexpired. Approx 1 Acre.

Lot 2

Four closes of Land, in the same occupation, called Far Shaw Close, Near Shaw Close, Meadow Close, and Moor Close. Approx 24 Acres.

Lot 3

Four other Closes of Land, called Horse Close, Croft, Laith, Croft, and Wood Close, in the occupation of the said Mrs. Oxley. Approx 23 Acres.

Lot 4

A Messuage, Barn, and outbuildings, on the easterly side of the Canklow Wood, with several Closes of Land, called Laith Close, House Close, Six Acres, Fourth Close, Fifth Close, Eight Acres, Four Acres, Doe Royd, and Canklow Field, in the occupation of John Whitehead and the executors of the late George Taylor. Approx 63 Acres.

Lot 5

Three Closes of land, called Upper Have Croft, and Little Norrells, in the occupation of the said John Whitehead, and of the late Jonathan Storkey's representatives. Approx 15 Acres.

Lot 6

A Messuage, Homestead, and Premises, and several Closes of Land, called Middle Field, Hanging Bank, Oak Tree Flatt, Water Slacks, with Lane in the Middle Field, in the occupation of the representatives of the late Jonathan Storkey and others. Approx 37 Acres.

Lot 7

Seven Closes of Land, occupied by the said John Whitehead, and others, called Bent Field Flatt, Black Hill Flatt, Near Havecroft, Near Broom Close, Far Broom Close, Upper Havecroft, and Little Havecroft. Approx 53 Acres.

Lot 8

A Close of Land, called Bent Field Flatt, in the occupation of the representatives of the late Jonathan Storkey. Approx 5 Acres.

Lot 9

Three Closes of Land, called Gallow Tree Hill, Little Gallow Tree Hill, and Bent Field Flatt, occupied by John Whitehead, and others.

Lot 10

A Messuage, now used as a Public House, with Barns, Stables, Outbuildings, Croft, Garden, etc. and also sundry Closes of Land, called Lower Sidlings, and Long Lands, in the occupation of Wm. Cooper, and others. Approx 23 Acres.

Lot 11

A Close of Land, called Dew Hill Close, occupied by the representatives of the late Jonathan Storkey. Approx 3 Acres.

Lot 12

A Messuage, etc. with Barns, Orchard, and Garden, and several Closes of Land, called Croft, Hunger Hills, Near Hunger Hills, and Far Hunger Hills, occupied by Francis Dolphin, and the representatives of the late Jonathan Storkey. Approx 23 Acres.

Lot 13

A Messuage, croft, and Garden, in the occupation of the representatives of the late Jonathan Storkey, and a Close Of land, called Almond Leys, and tenanted by Thomas Hammond. Approx 6 Acres.

Lot 14

Three Closes of Land, called Hollings, occupied by Joseph Coldwell and Francis Dolphin. Approx 10 Acres.

Lot 15

Two Closes of Land, called Hollings, in the occupation of the representatives of the late John Whitehead. Approx 8 Acres.

Lot 16

Two other Closes of Land, called Hollings, in the occupation of the representatives of the late Jonathan Storkey. Approx 6 Acres.

Lot 17

The Manor of Whiston, with all rights, Royalties, Liberties, Franchises, Members, Privileges and Appurtenances to the same belonging: also a Messuage and Dwelling-House, with Barns, Outhouses, Yards, Gardens, etc.. with several Closes of Land, surrounding and lying compact, and within a Ring Fence, and known by the name of Moor House Farm, in the tenancy of Martin Heward. Approx 125 Acres.

Lot 18

Sundry Closes, called Birchills, occupied by Thomas Herdwick and Joseph Coldwell. Approx 18 Acres.

Lot 19

Five Acres of Land, called Stowbridge Close, Great Wormhill, Little Wormhill, Lower Bottom Lands, and Upper Bottom Lands, in the occupation of the said Thomas Herdwick. Approx 30 Acres.

Lot 20

Two Closes of Land, occupied by the said Thomas Herdwick, called Upper New Close, and Lowe New Close. Approx 12 Acres.

Lot 21

A Messuage and Dwelling- House, with Garden, Orchard, Fold, etc.. at Upper Whiston, occupied by the said Thomas Herdwick: and also several Closes of Land in his occupation, and that of Thomas Pearson, called Great Orchard Flatt, Little Orchard Flatt, Croft, Intake, Flank Hill, Carr, Great Falls, and Little Falls. Approx 67 Acres.

Lot 22

An Allotment on Guilthwaite Common, in the occupation of Benjamin Boomer. Approx 4 Acres.

Lot 23

A Close of Land, called Guilthwaite Close, with the Wood adjoining, occupied by Joseph Coldwell. Approx 9 Acres.

Lot 24

A Messuage, called Abdy House, with Outbuildings, Yard etc.. occupied by John Whitehead, and the following Closes of Land adjoining, viz. Abdy Croft, Croft, Hilly Close, Revel Wood Bottom, Clay pool Close, Barley Close, Ley Close, Wheat Close, Stubbings, Lamb Hill Pasture, and Stubbings, in the occupation of William Cooper and others; and also a piece of Wood Land, called Revel Wood. Approx 54 Acres.

Lot 25

Two Closes, called Doles and Hurst Wife Close, occupied by Thomas Dolphin and William Cooper. Approx 4 Acres.

Lot 26

A Messuage, Croft, Orchard, and Gardens, with Two Closes of Land, called Doles, occupied by Joseph Coldwell and others. Approx 5 Acres.

Lot 27

A Messuage, Garden, Croft, etc.. with Three Closes of Land, called Great Dole, and Church Fields, in the occupation of the Executors of the late George Taylor, and the Representatives of the late Jonathan Storkey. Approx 15 Acres.

Lot 27 (a)

Whiston Mill, with House, Mill Dam, and Appurtenances, in the occupation of the Executors of the late George Taylor, under a lease wherof 23 years will be unexpired at Lady Day next.

The above estates are exonerated from tithes under the provisions of the Whiston Inclosure Act, and in lieu of Great Tithes, and by the Commissioners charged with annual Corn Rents, payable quarterly to the Reetor, and variable every seven years, according to the average price of wheat within the County of York.

The Manor of Whiston, which extends over about 3,000 Acres of Fertile Land, well watered, and finely wooded, would soon be well stocked with Game if properly protected.

Whiston is situated within two miles of Rotherham, six of Sheffield, twelve of Doncaster, and fourteen of Worksop.
