The Winter of 1963

56 Hall Close Avenue Whiston
Winter of 1963, 56 Hall Close Avenue

1962-3 was a very bad winter but South Yorkshire missed the heaviest of the snow, we had some, but not as much as the rest of the country. The main problem was the intense cold. We had frosts almost every day from November well into March. Most of January was below freezing with freezing fog - there was plenty of fog as it was before the Clean Aair Act - so lots of smoke.

I was a Trolley Bus driver then and we didn't have heaters I used to wear a pair of jeans under my uniform trousers it was that cold. Every morning on the first Trolley routes all the wires were well iced over and it was difficult to get the power until all the frost had burnt off the wires. It gave a magnificent fireworks display as we set off on a very jerky ride to the outer terminus at 4.30am !

My next door neighbour was Dennis Bartholomew and family. I remember well when Mrs. Bartholomews mother (Mrs Sheehan) had come up to stay from Aldershot and the snow came and she couldn't get back - they had that much snow down there, and by comparison we only had a sprinkle.

The winter of 1946-7 was much worse there was very deep snow and food shortages.
