Fatal accident in Whiston, March 1870

On Saturday, a somewhat singular accident, which terminated fatally, occurred at Whiston, to an old man, about sixty years of age, named Edward Rotherham, but better known as "Old Ned."

It appears that the unfortunate man , who was in the employ of Mr. Moss, of Whiston, was engaged in feeding a circular saw, and while pushing a piece of wood against the saw, a knot, or some hard substance in the wood, is supposed to have caused it to rebound.

It struck him violently on the breast, throwing him to the ground, at a distance of some two or three yards from the saw bench.

Death was almost instantaneous.
