The Bartholomew's

Looking at the Bartholomew family history: Philip and Dennis Bartholomew would take it in turns to take me, from the West Riding Health Department, just off Moorgate, to various clinics and shops with baby food - National Dried Milk, Orange Juice and Cod Liver Oil.

When my Mum died in Jan 1991, I met one of their son's who was looking after her funeral. He said that his Dad had mentioned me.I remember it was Tony who took care of Mum's funeral.

His father, Dennis and I were in an accident together on one of the country roads back in the winter before my 21st. birthday in February, 1959. We were in a mini van with cases of National Dried Milk behind us and cases of glass orange juice and cod liver oil bottles. The dash board wasn't padded nor the load tied down. We came up to a T junction, on the leg of the T, when a heavier van coming along the top bar of the T, put on his brakes and slid on some black ice and hit my side of the mini van. I thought it was all over. I'd just become engaged and I found myself being pushed into the dashboard by the cases in the back. I had quickly put my arms up in front of my eyes and they were protected from the flying glass. My legs were injured on the gear sticks and dashboard and Dennis hurt his chest on the steering wheel but, as you know, we both survived.

An ambulance 'happened' to be driving by after dropping off a patient somewhere, so they loaded me on and took me to the old Moorgate Hospital.

I was nervous, even riding on a bus, when the brakes were put on. It took years to stop holding onto anything. Boy!

That's a long time ago.
