Unlawful Lamb killing
4 July 1865
John Sidaway (31), stoker, was indicted with feloniously killing a lamb, with intent to steal, the property of Mr. George Appleyard, of Canklow, near Rotherham, on the 14th of June.
Mr. Ellis prosecuted.
The prisoner threw a lamb down a railway cutting 25 feet deep, and killed it.
The jury found the prisoner guilty.
He had one previous conviction against him, and Inspector Bielby stated that the prisoner belonged to a gang of thieves. The prisoner was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment, with hard labour.
